In this introductory workshop, Heather D’Angelo, founder of the sustainable fragrance brand, Carta, will guide students through the process of designing and crafting a natural fragrance. Students will be introduced to a palette of over 35 essential oils, absolutes, and natural isolates, including a few rare ingredients that Heather personally sourced from the Amazon rainforest and were featured in Carta’s debut fragrance, Moena 12|69.The workshop will cover the art and science of perfume craft, including laboratory basics, formula development, and blending techniques. Heather will also review how to read material safety data sheets in order to provide students with an understanding of essential oil safety, and the importance of sustainable sourcing when choosing natural materials.Students will leave with their formula, a bottle of fragrance developed under Heather’s close guidance, and a take home guide about how to continue fragrance experimentation at home.This 2.5 hour workshop includes all materials, snacks, beverages, and a 20% discount off of everything in our shop!About the instructor: Heather D’Angelo is a San Francisco-based perfumer, musician (with the band Au Revoir Simone), and ecologist. The dream for Carta originated while she was collecting botanical samples from the Malaysian rainforest as part of her research at Columbia University. After several years of working with plant-based aromatic compounds, she developed an understanding that scent, like music, is a transformative instrument.
